Diptych of Christ the Teacher and the Virgin of Kazan. This traditional Russian wedding or travel diptych icon is attractively housed in a plush burgundy velvet case. Each image is set behind a detailed, gold-colored metal cover. The case easily folds for travel. 3" x 2½" when closed.
The face of the Blessed Mother is grave, yet displays sweetness and saddened tenderness. Her head bows in the direction of the Christ child, represented standing upright and facing the viewer, bestowing a blessing. "Our Lady of Kazan", or "Theotokos of Kazan", represents the Virgin Mary as protector and patron of Her city. She is of the Hodegetria type. The icon of "Christ the Teacher" is a variant of the Pantocrator image. His right hand blesses while the left holds the New Testament open to the passage from John 13:34 "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another." The inscriptions in Slavonic are: "Mother of God", "Most Blessed Holy Mother of God of Kazan", "Jesus Christ" and "He Who Is" around the halo.
