Gorbachev and Communist Leaders. Most of the the early "Gorby" (an mildly affectionate name for "Gorbachev") dolls were made by talented amateurs in the Soviet Union. This one is somewhat better than most from that era (1980s). Mikhail Gorbachev transformed the USSR by unleashing a pair of political and cultural shock waves that led to unrestrained freedom of expression. The first was "Перестройка" (Perestroika, i.e., rebuilding) and the second, "Гласность" (Glasnost, i.e, openness). On this doll, only Perestroika is mentioned - on his black tie. And he is depicted in emperor's robes with his symbols of power - a hammer and a sickle. The robe is red velvet and fur-trimmed. His face is benevolent.

On early sets there are no depictions of Boris Yeltsin as he had yet to arrive on the scene. Thus we date this set prior to 1991. And so the second doll is Leonid Brezhnev. He is satirically depicted as holding a bottle of vodka, 40 proof no less, and a glass. His suit is be-speckled with military medals, even one on the back of brown pants, and he sports a red nose. The Ukrainian "peasant" and  First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Nikita Khrushchev has an ear of corn, a symbol of his extreme devotion to the cultivation of corn and the shoe, which he banged on his desk in the UN in 1960, as a sign of his displeasure. On this set of dolls Stalin (1924-1953) is depicted holding a hatchet dripping blood, a macabre image that points to his reputation as the "butcher".  Lenin holds a red book with "Marx" and "sex" (!) on the cover. Tsar Nicholas II, depicted humbly, is the tail doll.

This doll stands apart from those that were "mass-produced" throughout the mid-1990s for tourists and is far more interesting than today's silk-screened and decal versions. Very good condition with some signs of age (Khrushchev has a bit of paint loss. Moscow, 6 nest, 7" tall down to 2". 1 only.
