Miracle of St. George and the Dragon (Чудо Георгия о Змие). This is an elegant hand painted on papier-mache circular hagiographic icon enhanced with bright colors and finished with a shiny lacquer. There is a small hole at the top for hanging. It was signed by the artist: Olga Bychkova and dated 1994. Approximately 9¾" diameter. 1 only.

The icon depicts the most important event attributed to St. George, that of slaying the fierce dragon that lived in a lake near Silena, Libya. Astride his white horse, he defeats the creature, representing Satan, with one fierce strike of his lance. With this act, he simultaneously rescues the princess Elizabeth, (shown here crowned and in a blue gown). He then preaches to, and converts, the citizens of Silena to Christianity (shown in a group atop) and distributes his reward to the poor. An angel descends from heaven (shown by the hand of Christ emerging from a madala top left) and crowns him.

St. George slaying the dragon is more formally known as Holy Great-Martyr St. George the Victory-Bearer, or Trophy-Bearer. He was a Christian Roman soldier, born sometime in the late 3rd century in Cappadocia. His mother was Palestinian. Overall he symbolizes the earthly manifestation of Archangel St. Michael, with whom he has much in common. St. George is the patron saint of Moscow, England, farmers, soldiers and scouting.
