Paintings of Nikolai Roerich (Картины Николая Рериха) Art Matryoshka Doll. An accomplished Russian artist from Rostov-on-the_Don painted this remarkable Matryoshka in 1993. She selected paintings from Roerich's "Russian Series" and "Sketches from Travels in Old Russian Cities" which emphasize the beginning of the Slavs and of Rus. The first doll is titled "Overseas Guest" a study on the heroic and brave Varangians. Subsequent dolls highlight his travels, the Slavs on the river Dnepr, and churches and saints. Known primarily as a Symbolist painter, Roerich (1874-1947) worked with Byzantine styles as well. Masha Novikova signed and dated this doll. The dolls are very detailed and the first two dolls have the inside lips painted in gold and blue (see pictures). 10 nest, 11" down to ¾". Fine condition, 1 only.
