Religious Wood Carvings from Russia The Russian Shop / Maison Russe 800-778-9404
Saint Joseph, depictred usually as a carpenter, is also the patron saint of workers. He was an equal, affectionate and active participant in the daily life of Mary and Jesus. Images of the Theotokos, or "God-Bearer", are central icons of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. The earliest images are found in the catacombs of Rome. In 432, the Council of Ephesus decreed Mary is Theotokos because her son Jesus is one person who is both God and man, divine and human. The term Mother of God describes the family relationship. Both terms are used in the Russian Orthodox Church. A wonderfully expressive wood carving of the Holy Family. Hand carved and painted in Russia. 7" tall.
