Religious Wood Carvings from Russia The Russian Shop / Maison Russe 800-778-9404
Images of the Theotokos, or "God-Bearer", are central icons of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. The earliest images are found in the catacombs of Rome. In 432, the Council of Ephesus decreed Mary is Theotokos because her son Jesus is one person who is both God and man, divine and human. The term Mother of God describes the family relationship. Both terms are used in the Russian Orthodox Church. A Russian wood carving of the young Mother of God cradling the Infant Baby Jesus. Hand carved, painted with signatures of both the carver and the painter. 7 1/2" tall. [#MCV-12] 1 only Angels Depiction of the Birth of Christ |
