Larger box painted with medieval Russian interior scene depicting the ceremonial kiss. A shadowy figure is visible in the entranceway on the right. All are dressed in richly colorful clothing. Signed by the artist. Papier-mache, mother-of-pearl inlays, oil paints, metallic powders, lacquer. Footed hinged box with decorative freehand scroll borders. 7 1/2 x 5 x 2 1/2.

General Nikolai Nikolaevich Raevsky (1771-1829) was a military commander, whose corps, during the Battle of Borodino, defended the Kurgan Heights at the center of the positions occupied by the Russian troops. This was the battery that repelled all the attacks of the French. Miniature based on the George Dawe painting circa 1828. Intricate tartan design painted on back. Papier-mache, oil paints, lacquer. Hinged cigarette case. 4 x 3 x 1/2.
