Sergiev Posad and Tver

Sergiev Posad has a long history of toy manufacture. "Settlement of Sergius" (in honor of St. Sergius of Radonezh) is a fairly large city and the administrative center of Sergiyevo Posadsky District in the Moscow Oblast. It is a city with a rich heritage. It grew up around the greatest of Russia's many monasteries, the Trinity Sergiyeva Lavra (Trinity Monastery). The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius (Troitse Sergiyeva Lavra) was founded in 1345 and is the most important Russian monastery and the spiritual center of the Russian Orthodox Church. Due to the town's name having such strong religious connections, the Soviet authorities changed it to "Zagorsk" (in memory of the Russian revolutionary Zagorsky) in 1930. When the Soviet Union collapsed, back the name went to Sergiev Posad.

Tver also produced many interesting toys and dolls and its name shifted from Tver (1135-1930), to Kalinin (1931-1991), and back to Tver. Located north of Moscow, Tver was formerly the capital of a powerful medieval state and a model provincial town in the Russian Empire. Sergiev Posad grew in the 15th century around one of the greatest of Russian monasteries, the Trinity Lavra established by St. Sergius of Radonezh. It was named Sergiev (1919-1930) and Zagorsk (1930-1991).

Dolls from these towns were some of the best made in Russia.
