Flower Maiden from Sergiev Posad (Девица из Сергиева Посада). A blue-eyed maiden from 1994. Finely decorated using the techniques described below. Initialed by the artist on the bottom of the first doll. 5 nest, 4½" to 1½".
In the early to mid-1990s until about the year 2000 (between the end of the Soviet era of strictly traditional dolls and the opening up of mass production techniques that took hold after 2000) there was a mini renaissance of quality doll making and painting, exemplified by dolls from Sergiev-Posad. These come to light now and then and are a real treat. Dolls are decorated with pyrographic artwork (pyrography, also known as pokerwork or wood burning, is the technique of decorating wood with a heated tool - it literally means "writing with fire") as well as gold and silver foil (known as "potal") and painted enhancements.
