Summer Troika (Messenger) Snuffbox. Unsigned Vishnyakov Workshop or Lukutin Factory, mid 19th century. Papier-mache, gold leaf, oil, lacquer and painted scene.

The fashion for snuffing was very popular in Russia throughout the 18th through the 19th century. A Western influence, at first it was confined to high society. Tobacco was imported and quite expensive, thus snuffboxes too were made from precious materials such as ivory, porcelain, tortoise-shell, silver and gold, etc. From the beginning of the 19th century, to alleviate costs, boxes were made from papier-mache and decorated with genre scenes. The Factory of Petr Lukutin was a big producer of snuffboxes as was his competitor, Osip Vishnyakov. Vishnyakov's factory flourished in the mid-19th century. Boxes were unsigned and some artists worked for both Lukutin and Vishnyakov. 2¾" x 1½" x 1". In good vintage condition, some chips (but not on the faces, bodies or horses - see pictures to study condition.) 1 only, as shown.
