Fairy Tale of the Wooden Eagle (Сказка Деревянный Орел). Painted in Sergiev Posad in 1994, this 8 nested doll tells the tale (described below) in brightly and fully painted fashion. Signed and titled by the artist. 7¼" tall. 1 only. Please examine the many photos of this wonderful doll.

A tale about a king who had many talented servants, including master carpenters, potters, goldsmiths and tailors. They all vied to please the king best - his clothing, his dishware, and decorative ornaments for his palace - all were of the highest quality. Two of them, the carpenter and the goldsmith, took to arguing amongst themselves as to who could produce the finest objects for the king. He overheard them and suggested they each make one rarity. After a week had passed, the goldsmith brought a solid gold duck and demanded all to marvel at its verisimilitude! The queen and the prince did marvel, and the queen even accused the goldsmith of merely gold plating a real duck! The carpenter, in turn, produced a marvelous life-like wooden eagle. After demonstrating how it worked, the carpenter and the king, not paying strict attention, were taken by surprise by the prince who sprang onto the eagle and flew away! This angered the king, who accused the carpenter of deliberately ruining his family, and ordered the carpenter to the dungeon, and, should the prince not return in two weeks time, to the gallows. In the meantime, the prince flew far away and came to another kingdom. He landed by a small hut in which lived an old woman. He pleaded with her to let him stay the night. He asked her to describe what manner of city he was in and she told him about the king's daughter, who had been locked away in a tower in order to prevent her from falling in love and marrying. This sparked the curiosity of the prince, who, the very next morning, flew on his eagle to the top of the tower. Naturally, he instantly fell in love with the princess, who in turn, fell in love with him. They could not stop gazing at each other! After a misadventure with the evil nurse who guarded the tower, the prince whisked the princess away back to his kingdom, just in time to save the life of the carpenter who had created the wooden eagle. And since that time all carpenters in the country have become greatly respected.
