The Novels of Fyodor Dostoevsky. A one-of-a-kind jewel masterpiece art doll that was painted and signed by the artist (L.G. Saprikina) of Rostov on the Don. Each doll has two different paintings on each side (except for the last tiny doll) that illustrates a character or a scene from the great novels written by Dostoevsky. Book titles in Russian are lettered between each doll. All the work, including the titles, was done by hand. 12" down to tiny. Each doll has a fine shiny coat of lacquer. We have only one.
While the first illustration is a portrait of Fyodor Dostoyevsky from an original painting by Konstantin Vasiliev (done in 1976) showing him at his writing table with a tall lit candle, many are by Ilya S. Glazunov (from the out-of-print book "Dostoyevsky's Characters in Ilya Glazunov's Illustrations" published in 1986). Additionally, a set of 23 fine art postcards were issued in 1971 of Glazunov's illustrations for "White Nights", as well as other Dostoevsky works. For example, the second doll has illustrations by Glazunov for the "Idiot", including one titled "The Death of Nastasya Filippovna". The third doll has Glazunov's illustration of Elder Zosima from "Brothers Karamazov". The full list of titles on this fine matryoshka beginning with the first doll: 1)Dostoevsky, 2) the Idiot, 3) Brothers Karamazov, 4) Devils, 5) The Insulted, 6) Raw Youth, 7) Crime and Punishment, 8) White Nights, 9) Brothers Karamazov and 10) St. Petersburg. We would love to give details on all the paintings but there is a "treasure hunt" element to finding information and details about all the illustrations.
Minor condition note: production flaw on the 13th doll, otherwise near fine. All the pieces are hand painted.
