Palekh Troika (Палехская Тройка)  Palekh, 1989. By Ya. Bragin.  The famous sleigh or carriage that is pulled by three horses is both a symbol of old Russia and a symbol of contemporary Palekh. It was developed in olden days during the 17th century as a delivery system for mail. It became more common to travel by troika later, as it could reach speeds of 45-50 kilometres (30mph). The artist has painted an elaborate miniature with bright Palekh colors and dynamic motion within the circle. The people are grouped to the right and the three horses strain and pull.Troika is sometimes spelled Troyka. A beautiful freehand border has also been painted around the scene. Signed and dated by the artist on the inside edge of the cover. Egg tempera, lacquer, hinged papier-mache box. 5x3½"x¾". 1 only.
