Matryona (Матрена). The name of this unusual doll means "lady". Signed and titled by the artist on the bottom, the set appears to be Sergiev Posad work from the turn of the century. It is of the toy "villagers" type, which when the head doll is opened, a number of small carved and painted pieces are revealed. This one has two men, two women, a snowman and a Christmas tree. Small pieces are 2" tall and doll is 4". The head doll is nicely decorated with a scene from the Russian folk song and poem "Snowstorm (Метелица)", in which a young man courts his beloved. This versatile doll can also be a "counting" toy for slightly older children (over 3) and a Christmas set. 1 only, as shown.
