The city of Vologda came into being in the mists of deep antiquity on the high right bank of the self-named river. The artistic treasures of ancient Vologda are concentrated mainly in the collections of the Vologda Regional Museum. They reflect the work of local artists, although there were also imported works. Many valuable monuments of artistic culture from the Vologda Region are also in museums located in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
