Baba Yaga (Баба Яга). The notorious witch flies about in her mortan using a broomstick to guide her through the woods. Ornament was hand painted in Yaroslavl, Russia. 4¼" in height. Gift boxed. 1 only.

The history of this distinctive creature of Russian folklore is convoluted. The earliest literary references to her occur in the 1750's. She tends to operate alone, but sometimes with her three sisters, all with the same name. Her flying apparatus is a mortar with either a pestle or a broomstick as the rudder. She lives in the deep and dark forest in a hut on chicken legs, which can hop and move about so as to give her a clear vision of who is approaching. She can be helpful and considerate or she can be hindering and evil. Baba means "old woman", a shortening of "babushka", while Yaga can mean "snake" or "anger" in various Slavic languages. She figures prominently in fairy tales about Vasilisa the Fair, The Maiden Tsar, and others.
