Catherine The Great as a Young Woman (Екатерина II Великая). Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg was born in Stettin, Pomerania, Prussia in 1729. In a twist of fate, she came to power following a coup d'état that overthrew her husband and second cousin, Peter III, who was the elder daughter of Peter the Great and his wife Empress Catherine I. She reigned as Empress of Russia from 1762 until her death in 1796. Catherine commissioned "The Bronze Horseman" statue, which stands in St. Petersburg on the banks of the Neva River. Fedoskino.
