Deacon Martyr Stephen with Old Testament Elders. 19th century, Russia. Shown here with Moses and Abraham. Stephen is venerated as the first martyr of Christianity. According to the Acts 6 of the Apostles, he was a deacon in the early Church at Jerusalem. The Catholic, Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, and Lutheran churches and the Church of the East view Stephen as a saint. He is generally represented with a crown, three stones, a martyr's palm frond, a censer, and often holding a miniature church building. Stephen is often shown as a young, beardless man wearing a deacon's vestments.
