The face of the Blessed Mother is grave, yet displays sweetness and saddened tenderness. Her head bows in the direction of the Christ child, represented standing upright and facing the viewer, bestowing a blessing. "Our Lady of Kazan", or "Theotokos of Kazan", represents the Virgin Mary as protector and patron of Her city. She is of the Hodegetria type. The icon of Christ is the Pantocrator image in which His right hand blesses while the left holds the New Testament. The inscriptions in Slavonic are: "Mother of God", "Most Blessed Holy Mother of God of Kazan", "Icon of Our Lord Jesus Christ" and "He Who Is" around the halo.
