Elizabeth: Grand Duchess of Russia. Hugo Mager. NY: Carroll & Graf, 1998. 418 pages. Black and white illustrations. About fine copy with the dustjacket in a protective Mylar jacket cover.
A biographical study of the maternal grand daughter of Queen Victoria. It was Elizabeth of Hesse who aided in the marriage of Alexandra, her sister, and Tsar Nicholas II. According to the author, Elizabeth led a life of high drama, rejecting her cousin's propositions, Prince William of Prussia (who became Wilhelm II of Germany) and eventually marrying Sergei Alexandrovich, grand duke of Russia, who was assassinated in 1905. She became devoutly religious after his death and rejected Rasputin's involvement with her sister and brother-in-law, which English historian Hugo Mager describes in detail.
