Zagorsk Family (Семья из Загорска) Art Doll. A pair of artists, one the painter, and the other, the turner, both from Zagorsk (aka Sergiev Posad), produced this interesting matryoshka. The first doll is a brightly dressed and bewhiskered turn-of-the-century fellow in a black cap and his trained balalaika-playing cat. The details on this first doll is extraordinary. His wife is painted with a colorful cockerel. The first of several children - a son - holds a kitchen spoon and glass next to two bottles from which he pulls a concoction, a daughter poses with an anxious pig, a fellow playing a bayan follows next, a horn player, a daughter with an apple (presumably for the pig) and finally a tiny barefooted baby. A wonderful set of fully painted characters step out from this set painted in Zagorsk around 1990. The paper label, in Russian, inserted by the artists credit them with their work. Boldly signed in yellow by the painter on the bottom of the first doll. 8 nest, 9" down to 1". Fine condition. 1 only.
