Fedoskino Winter Troika Ride. An authentic Russian lacquer hinged box from Fedoskino painted in the late 1970's. In fine condition. Traditional materials used by the artist include oil paints, papier-mache, metallic powders and lacquer. The box is hinged and rests on four button feet. Comes in its original cotton-lined case. 6¼"x 4"x 2". 1 only, as shown.
The scene depicted includes a classic sleigh or carriage that is pulled by three horses. It is both a symbol of old Russia. The troika (or troyka) was developed in the 17th century as a delivery system for mail. It became more common to travel by troika later, as it could reach speeds of 45-50 kilometers (30 mph). Its system is that the center horse holds to a straight line while the two opposite pulling horses generate the high speeds that are typical of a well-balanced troika.
