Golden Ring (Золотое кольцо). An Orthodox elder monk (старецъ) with azure eyes displays the churches of the "Golden Ring", a ring of towns and cities of great antiquity that lie northeast of Moscow. The head doll leads off with the famous Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, founded in the 14th century by St Sergius of Radonezh in Sergiyev Posad - the only city in the Moscow Region to be included in the Golden Ring. Other towns include Suzdal, Rostov, Murom and Uglich.
Note: the first painting has some "craquelure" (fine cracks in the varnish) visible upon close inspection but not distracting. Enhancements and details abound on this finely painted and unusual matryoshka. Sergiev-Posad, signed by the artist pair (V. & L. Gerasimovi), early 1990s. 7" in height down to 2". 1 only, as shown.
