In this depiction, the Holy Virgin and Child are flanked by Saint Peter on the left and Saint Paul on the right poised in supplication. The face of the Blessed Mother is youthful and sweet, yet grave with saddened tenderness. Her head bows in the direction of Christ, Who stands upright facing the onlooker, and bestows a blessing. His left hand is hidden. Titles are all in Church Slavonic. The icons are painted and the overall icon is intricately carved. The hinges are wood (no nails or metal). Made in Russia about 30 years ago. 6"x7" when open. 1 only, as shown.

The Kazan Mother of God is an historically notable icon that has played a major role in Russia's destiny. The original icon was carried by Prince Dmitry Pozharsky (1577-1642) into battle. The icon then made an appearance in 1579 in Kazan, the capital of a Tartar khanate, where, at the time, half the city was being destroyed by fire. A special church was built in Kazan in 1679, but the icon was moved, first to Moscow, and then to St. Petersburg where it was installed in the magnificent Kazan Cathedral on Nevsky Prospect, located in the center of the city.
