Konyok Gorbunok aka The Little Humpbacked Horse (Конёк горбунок).The art for this matryoshka is based on the fairy tale in rhyme Pyotr Pavlovich Yershov (Пётр Павлович Ершов - 1815-1869). It is an allegory of trust and friendship. The little magical horse accompanies the happy-go-lucky peasant boy Ivanushka through many adventures and ultimately helps him to win the hand of the princess in marriage. The wonderful little horse was originally 3" tall (in the style of Tom Thumb). This fairy tale was a great favorite of Nicholas II, the Last Tsar of Russia (1868-1918), a story which he would read to his children before bedtime.
