Mordva (Мордовия) Roly Poly Chime Doll. The traditional roly poly has many different names, including "nevalyashka"(неваляшка) and "vanka-vstanka" (ванька-встанька), as well as the descriptive "chime doll". Due to the weight in the bottom half, the doll will sway and return upright, as well as give a bell sound. Hand made and hand painted in Mordovia in the 1970's or 1980's. Very unusual in our experience, as we've seen only one. In very good condition (slight defects noted in the series of pictures). 3¼" in height. 1 only.
An interesting feature of this doll is that it opens at the center to reveal its primitive inner workings. As can be seen in the photographs, the sound is made by several small iron rods and an attached disc.
The Republic of Mordovia, or Mordvinia, has been a federal republic of Russia since 1994. When this doll was made - in the late 1980s - Mordovia had been part of the Soviet Union since the 1930s and was known as Mordovian Autonomous Socialist Soviet Republic (Mordovian ASSR). The republic is located in the eastern part of Russia. The Mordvins are predominantly Christian and are related to the Mari and the Finns.
