Musical Maidens. Brown-eyed blond-haired maidens with expressive faces each hold a musical instrument - a balalaika, a bayan, spoons, a tambourine and a "platochek" (handkerchief). A real tour de force of doll decorating! Each one displays intricate wood burnt artwork and painted enhancements. Pyrography (aka "writing with fire") is also known as pokerwork or wood burning, and is the artistic technique of decorating wood with a heated tool. The textures and enrichments are very impressive and this kind of attention to detail is uncommon. Initialed by the artist on the bottom of the first doll and titled "Zagorsk", which indicates pre-1991 production. First doll top is a wee bit larger than the bottom, nothing serious. 6" down to 1½". 1 only.
