The Russian sarafan (i.e., sundress) could be quite heavy when worn for festivities. The tops and sides were elaborately decorated. Traditionally, the young wore red or burgundy colors (the old wore blue and black). Colored sarafans appeared at the beginning of the 19th century, when dyed fabrics made in factories began to be sold everywhere. Before that, peasant cloths were made from unpainted natural fabric.
