The Icon of the Virgin “Galaktotrophousa” (Γαλακτοτροφουσα, which mean “The Milk-Giver”) is also known as Mother of God “Nourisher of Life” or the "Nursing Mother of God". In Serbian, it is Икона Богородице Млекопитатељнице. It shows the Mother of God suckling Christ. Not many modern icons use this composition, but it is a very old depiction. The feast day is celebrated on July 3 (and January 12) and the icon resided for centuries in St. Savas’ Monastery near Jerusalem. Today the original is in the Hilandar Monastery on Mt Athos, which was founded in 1198 by the Serbian Sava. The Milk-Giver Icon is in the Iconostasis of Hilandar’s church.
