St. Panteleimon was born in the city of Nicomedia into the family of the illustrious pagan Eustorgios around 275. His mother, St. Eubula was a Christian. Pantoleon, his given name, was baptized by St. Hermolaos and given the name Panteleimon (meaning "All-Merciful"). He dedicated his life to the suffering, the sick, the unfortunate and the needy and he treated all those who turned to him without asking for payment. St. Panteleimon is venerated in the Orthodox Church as a mighty saint, and the protector of soldiers. He is invoked in the Mystery of Anointing the Sick, at the Blessing of Water, and in the Prayers for the Sick.
