Maintaining traditional folk art in today's technological world is a difficult feat indeed. One such enterprise is the factory workshop of folk craft "Belomorskie Uzory" (Фабрика народных промыслов "Беломорские Узоры") in Archangelsk. Its main objective is to preserve traditional customs and art of the Russian North, which involves many diversified skills. These include wood carving and colorful decoration, chip carving (ptichka), distinctive embroidery, weaving, stitching and knitting, and the "Kargopol clay toy". Thematic material incorporates images of birds and horses, of which the latter is of great importance. The mythology of a horse means the dawn of the sun, wisdom, strength, intelligence and the inevitable race of time. It is also a symbol of fertility, courage and power, and the cycles of the development of the world. Other symbols include the humble duck that symbolizes an orderly universe.
