Riding in a Troika (Катание на тройке). The troika is the classic theme of Russian art, including lacquer miniatures. The famous sleigh or carriage that is pulled by three horses is both a symbol of old Russia and a symbol of contemporary Palekh. The color palette is traditional: red and gold for the horses and earth tones for the fields and forests. The time is summer right after the harvest in September and the workers are free to ride around the village and its environs. This box is elegantly painted and shows an imaginative expression of form. Egg tempera, gold, lacquer, papier-mache. Approximately 5½" x 3¾" x 1". 1 only.
The box is the work of Zlata Leonidovna Maksimova (Злата Леонидовна Максимова). Born in 1968, Zlata Leonidovna studied at the Palekh Art School from 1984-1989.
