Vladimir Soloukin (1924-1997) was a Russian writer and poet, who was a leading figure of the "Village prose" ("Деревенская литература") group of writers. Soloukhin's book describes his travels throughout the countryside in the 1950s and 1960s in search of discarded and hidden church icons. Sometimes, he discovered beautiful 16th century icons underneath layers of grime and over-painting, and he also found ancient icons chopped into bits and rotting away. Considered his finest work.
