Semenov Lad with Cosmonaut (Паренек с космонавтом). The classic cosmonaut Matryoshka doll produced for the Soviet space exploration program and refined down through the years was that of three girls (or women). The Semenov Lad was a bit of hybrid (leave it to the Russians!) in that it combined the cosmonaut doll in the center with the popular lad, or boy, doll. This particular version is from the mid-1980s with strict formal painted features and lathe work. The boy style was featured in a large and a small bottle holder, so they seem to pop up here and there. On the bottom of the first doll is the "Made in Russia" orange paper label with the product code typed in. These labels were attached to dolls that were made and stockpiled prior to the breakup of the Soviet Union. They were attached for import reasons to indicate the "new" country from which they came was now Russia, not USSR. 8" to 3½". A very well-crafted and popular vintage doll. 2 available, (one not shown has slightly different lathing and painting and was made a bit later).
