As it fancifully rises up, St. Basil's Cathedral, also known as The Cathedral of the Intercession, enhances Moscow's Red Square like no other structure in the world. It is a masterpiece of medieval Russian architecture and a gorgeous fantasy of color and design. The cathedral was built in the 16th century by the command of Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the inclusion of the territories of Kazan and Astrakhan into the Russian empire. The architects were Posnik and Barma (who actually may have been only one person). There are eight chapels that surround the main, central chapel, which is topped by a tent-style roof. Look closely: no two onion domes are alike! St. Basil's Cathedral is Russia's most famous church and since 1991 has occasionally been used for liturgical and other services by the Russian Orthodox Church.
