Holy Great Martyr St. George (Святой великомученик Георгий). Modern day brass casting of a 19th century icon which, in turn, follows the iconography of a 16th century icon. Detailed open work (просечная лития or prosechnoye litie) with Slavonic inscriptions. St. George and the Dragon is more formally known as Holy Great Martyr St. George the Victorious ( Георгий Победоносец). As he is one of the most famous saints in the Christian world, he is known by many names, including George of Cappadocia, George of Lydd, St George Trophy-Bearer and, in Greek: Άγιος Γεώργιος). In life, he was a Christian Roman soldier, born sometime during the late 3rd century in Cappadocia to a Palestinian mother. He is a symbol of the earthly manifestation of Archangel Saint Michael, with whom he has much in common. When painted, St. George is often depicted in the process of slaying a dragon, a symbol of Satan, while riding on a white horse. St. George is the patron saint of Moscow, England, farmers, soldiers and scouting. At the top is small image of the Vernicle (Christ Not-Made-By-Hands).
