The image depicts the most important event attributed to St. George, that of slaying the fierce dragon that lived in a lake near Silena, Libya. Astride his horse, he defeats the monster which represents Satan, with one fierce strike of his lance. With this act, he simultaneously rescues the princess Elizabeth, converts the citizens of Silena to Christianity, and distributes his promised reward to the poor.
St. George Slaying the Dragon is formally known as Holy Great-Martyr St. George the Victory-Bearer, or Trophy-Bearer. He was a Christian Roman soldier, born in the late 3rd century in Cappadocia. His mother was Palestinian. Overall he symbolizes the earthly manifestation of Archangel St. Michael, with whom he has much in common. St. George is the patron saint of Moscow, England, farmers, soldiers and scouting.
