Twelve Months (Двенадцать месяцев). Second plate in the GIFTS OF THE SEASONS Collection by Bradford Exchange, 1993. Art by Elena Alimova. This series came at the tail end of the collector frenzy for Russian plates, and as such are less common.
Twelve Months is a fairy tale written in dramatic play form in the 1940's by Samuil Marshak (1887-1964). It was sourced from a Czech or Bohemian legend. An evil stepmother sends her daughter out on New Year's Eve into the forest to gather snowdrops for the Queen's holiday table. The daughter nearly freezes to death, but luckily she encounters twelve brothers (that represent the 12 months of the year) who help her, in true fairy tale form, to fulfill her task.
