Raffi (1835-1888) (Hakob Melik Hakobian). The Fool (Khente). Translated by Jane S. Wingate. Introduction by K.A. Sarafian. Raffi (pen name) was a prolific writer whose works were published in the local newspapers. "The Fool", his most popular work, appeared first in serialized form in the newspaper "Mshak" ("The Tiller") in Tiflis in 1880. The novel is important to understanding the historical context of the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire during the Russo-Turkish War in the late 19th century. Through Raffi's works Armenians learned to read their language and their history.
