The Proposal (Предложение). A young couple outfitted in traditional village folk clothing sit across from one another in a small wooden boat docked by the banks of the river. It is bathed in moonlight. The boy, who wears a flower crown, has picked three wild plums, which he holds out to her in his hand for her acceptance. The number three in Russian culture symbolizes spirituality, fulfillment and completeness. It is also the number of good fortune, and, according to the Pythagoreans, the first true number.
A fine lacquer box by Lyubov Alekseyevna Kukharkina (Kylikova) (Любовь Алексеевна Кухаркина (Куликова), who was born in 1961 in the village of Sharanga, Nizhny Novgorod region (с. Шаранга Нижегородской обл.) From 1980 to 1985, she studied at the Palekh Art School and subsequently was employed in the Palekh art-production workshops for a few years, before it fell apart into smaller companies. She also participated in exhibitions beginning in 1988. Papier-mache, egg tempera paints, lacquer. Decorative freehand gold scroll border. 1991, signed by the artist.
