In 1852 a special building called the New Hermitage was built, where the main collections of the Hermitage were housed. This subsequently became a public museum and accessible to the general public. In the same class as the Louvre, the Metropolitan, and the British Museum, the Hermitage has about 3 million items from different eras, from the Stone Age to today. Its art gallery consists of 50 rooms of French art from the XVIII to XX century, 37 halls of Italian art, plus numerous halls of Dutch, Flemish, Spanish, German and other European schools. In its 353 rooms, the Hermitage displays great masterpieces such as Raphael, Giorgione, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Veronese, Rubens and many others.
Further, in its halls there are examples of art from Ancient Egypt, the old civilizations of Central Asia, Persia, China, nomadic peoples of the steppe expanses of Russia, masterpieces of ancient Greece and Rome and Byzantium. Exhibits of Russian culture, French impressionists and post-impressionists simple scratch the surface of this immense world museum.
