War-time memoirs of Igor Lutzky, who was a captain-lieutenant in the Soviet fleet, was witness to barbarities in the villages and cities of Ukraine, Crimea and Belarus. He describes the horrors of both Nazi Germany and Stalinist communism in graphic detail, especially in defense of Sevastopol in 1941-1942. Though captured in the end, he survived and managed to live in the West during the time when most Russian prisoners were surrendered back into the hands of the Soviets.
