Tsar Nicholas II and his family (Царь Николай II со своей семьей). This exquisite Russian nesting doll is the collaboration of three artists. One artist painted the portraits of each member of the family of the Last Tsar of Russia, beginning with Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarevich Alexei (The Heir to the Throne), Tsarevna Alexandra and the four Grand Duchesses: Olga, Tatiana, Marie and Anastasia. Nicholas is in military uniform of the Horse Guards, the oldest cavalry regiment in the Imperial Russian Guards' Corps whose Colonel-in-Chief was the reigning Emperor. His son, Tsarevich Alexei Nikolayevich is in the uniform of the Life-Guards 4th The Imperial Family's Rifle Regiment. The backs of each doll are decorated by another artist who is trained in the style of Palekh painting. Gold leaves and vines intermingle with red berries. The work is freehand and exquisite. The first doll has a large double-headed eagle with crowns, orb and scepter while each subsequent doll carries the Imperial crown with ribbons. The third artist painted the charming doll faces and bright red head coverings.
Very detailed and colorful work. Each piece is finely lacquered to a mirror-like sheen and even the bottoms of each doll are painted. Dated 1997, Rostov-on-the-Don, Russia. 6½" in height down to 1". 1 only, as shown.
