The Theotokos of "Unexpected Joy” (Икона Нечаянная Радость). This popular icon of the Mother of God has as its origin the writings of St. Dimitri of Rostov, who was a great 17th century hierarch, preacher, author and ascetic. He tells of a certain young man who, despite his sinful way of life, kept a prayerful devotion to the Mother of God. It is a beloved icon, which, drawn from these writings, came to be known as “The Unexpected Joy.”
