Venerable Sergius of Radonezh (Преподобный Сергий Радонежский) (1314-1392) was a spiritual leader and monastic reformer of medieval Russia, who founded the Holy Trinity Monastery near Moscow. His medieval biography states that he was born to the boyars Kiril and Maria near Rostov the Great and named Bartholomew (in honor of the Apostle so named). Together with Venerable Seraphim of Sarov, St. Sergius is one of the Russian Orthodox Church's most highly venerated saints. The Catholic Church officially recognizes Sergius as a saint as well.
