"Mashenka" ("Машенька") Matryoshka Doll. A classic! "Mashenka" is the the diminutive of Mary and the classic Semenov maiden is sometimes known by this name. So what makes these dolls classics? For starters, the faces, fingers and flowers on every piece are carefully hand painted. Each doll, down to the tiniest, has painted hands and fingers. Compare her to the current crop, and you'll see that the enhancements are decorated in the finest of Russian folk tradition. This doll is not from current production. These can be found everywhere, and some are even made in China (honestly!). These dolls reflect a bygone era when artists painted for the sake of painting and not for commercialism. This one has the round paper "Made in the USSR" label and was manufactured in the early to mid-1980's. It even has the original silk-screened box in good condition (which has foxing throughout, but is complete). 1 only, as shown. 9 nest, 9" down to 1¼".
