Spice or Tea Box. Vintage birch lacework box, mid-20th century Russia. Hand made detailed box from Veliky Ustyug (Великий Устюг), a town in the Vologda Oblast. This traditional Russian folk craft known as Shemogodsky birch bark carving (Шемогодская прорезная береста) features intricate birch lacework on the the tops and sides. Tops slide to the sides. Condition is very good with some wear and tear (look at photos to ascertain status). One foot has been repaired. This is a very nice example of older birch lacework. 8¾"x 4"x 2¾". 1 only.
There is a stamp on the bottom of the box identifying the factory as "Шемагодский Комбинат", which is a misspelling of "Шемогодский". Much of the rest is not readable.
Shemogodsky carving is a traditional Russian folk art craft consisting of carving on birch. The most well-known masters are from the Shemogodsky Volost of Veliky Ustyug Uezd of the Vologda province of Russia.
