Vintage Carved Relief "Christ and Saints". The work on this set is very fine. Quality sets such as these do not surface often these days, and not that many were made in the first place. The wood is choice linden and the maker has tastefully left the grain of the wood intact. The initials of the carver are on the bottom of the set: "С.О.А." Made in Sergiev Posad around 1990. 5 nested, 6¼" down to 1½".
Christ the Teacher is a variant of the Pantocrator image. One hand blesses while the other holds an open Gospel. Inside of the halo - the symbol of holiness - are the three points, or arms, of the Cross, expressing the Holy Trinity. The three Greek letters are omega, omicron, and nu, meaning "He Who Is". Christ is carved wearing an elaborate robe with long sleeves. The second piece is St. Sergius of Radonezh, holding a staff. The last three pieces are one each of two apostles, one holding a scroll. The final piece is an abbot.
