Western Literature Authors Art Doll. If you search the world wide web, you will run into a myriad of matryoshka dolls with images of authors, celebrities and politicians. Most have one thing in common: they are decals or silkscreen. This set is not one of these. The Russian artist, in 1992, created and painted portraits of the greatest European and American writers. Remember, back in 1992, the collapse of the Soviet Union had just occurred, and the nation was hungry for knowledge. Talented unknown artists rose to the task.
Lined up from biggest to smallest, the artist celebrates some of the world's literary giants. He starts with Shakespeare, and follows with Cervantes (Don Quixote), Goethe (Faust) and Sir Walter Scott (Ivanhoe). The next three are Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe and Mark Twain. Then, showing a fondness for French writers, he finishes with Victor Hugo with his hands interlocked behind his back (Hunchback of Notre Dame), Alexandre Dumas (Three Musketeers and Count of Monte Cristo) and finally, Moliere (The Misanthrope).
The dolls are fully hand painted - there are no shortcuts involved. Signed and titled by the artist and dated 1992 on the bottom of the first doll. and signed by the artist. 10 nest, almost 11" in height down to tiny. There are some minor imperfections due to the lack of quality materials available at the time. Despite this hurdle, the set has weathered well and shows no major problems. 1 only.
