    Vintage and collectible Matryoshka dolls from the 1960's-1990's can be found here. These include, at any given time, dolls from Moldova, Yoscar (Yoshkar) Ola, Brest (Belarus) and Ukraine, Poland, Mari El Republic, Perm, Vladimir and the Moscow region and even the occasional Japanese Kokeshi. After all, it was Japanese craftspeople  that first inspired Russian painters and woodworker to make the matryoshka synonymous with their arts and crafts.

     

    • Cosmonaut (Космонавт). The space theme was a departure from the more traditional themes. The colors are muted earth tones and the decorative elements are simplified helmets, insignias, gloves and boots. This set doesn't appear on the market often, indicative of its lackluster sales when it was produced (late 1980s). The Made in USSR label used by the Brest factory is still intact. 4¼" down to 2⅛"

    • Vintage Matryoshka Matryoshka from Moldova. Made in 1988, when the country was a part of the Soviet Union known as the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (МАССР - Молдавская Автономная Советская Социалистическая Республика). Label reads: Министерство лесного хозяйства МАССР (Ministry of Forestry) and Волжский Комбинат (Volzhsky Plant) plus some product information, such as "Matryoshka 5-nest" and the year (1988) of production. Interesting color scheme. Glossy lacquer. 5 nest, 4½" down to 1¼".

    • Yoshkar Ola Matryoshka, 8 nest. Yoshkar-Ola (sometimes Yoscar-Ola) is the capital of the Mari El Republic in western Russia. The name literally means Red City in the language of the Mari. These dolls were sometimes referred to as Marijaha dolls. One feature of these sets is the lack of flowers. The dolls are tightly nested and painted in bright, primary colors. This one is 8-nested and was made in the 1980s. 5" down to around ½".

    • Father Frost (Santa Claus) Nesting Doll. Christmas nesting dolls before 1991 were uncommon (one guess why) and this one from Brest was one of the only sets available. Painted in primary colors, it had Santa holding a letter addressed to him. Vintage Brest matryoshka with a red and black "Made in the USSR" export paper label on the bottom of the first doll. Dolls from Brest were made in Belarus (Byelorussia, or Belarus), which up to 1991 was part of the Soviet empire. Brest (formerly Brest-Litovsk) is a city in Belarus at the border of Poland. For a long time, the Brest Matryoshka factory was a prolific production center for unusual nesting dolls. Their dolls were made from birch wood.
